Depth of Field

Posted on 3rd April, 2016

Depth of field is related to aperture (see our tutorial on aperture).

The term refers to the amount of the photographed scene which is in focus in front of and behind the main subject.

Referring to our aperture tutorial, a small aperture value will give a shallower depth of field, whereas a large aperture value will have more of the scene in focus.

Shallow Depth of FieldThis example shows a shallow depth of field.

The portions in front of and behind the boots are out of focus.
